Mission Statement and Vision

The mission of ECO-LABOR-ATION is to promote ecologically-sustainable lifestyle choices. We do this through open examination of technologies and lifestyle behaviors that create or reduce negative impacts by humans on the natural environment and its other inhabitants. Our wide-focus includes Clean Water Strategies, Ecological Construction, Support for Biodiversity & Compassion in Food-Production, Renewable Energy options, and Reduction of Soild Wastes and other pollutants. More narrowly, we target technologies and behaviors that are adoptable at the individual level on a voluntary basis, and we specifically consider the historical track-record and the required technical skills associated with each choice. We will strive to present information in terms that are accessible to an audience with a variety of backgrounds and ages.

As an organization, we envision our role to stimulate public dialog about- , participation in- and adoption of- ecologically-sustainable lifestyle choices. We are sensitive to the fact that regional or cultural norms often influence individual & group consumption patterns, waste production/disposal habits and energy decisions. Our intention is that participants to our forums, workshops or exhibitions will leave with greater technical understanding of the quantitative impact their individual lifestyle choices have on both the ecosystems they occupy as well as other distant locations. We will attempt to unite training experiences with charitable action and to foster the spirit of volunteerism and community involvement.  We also consider it a worthwhile challenge to develop events and activities that can be enjoyed by the public at no cost.

How does ECO-LABOR-ATION operate?

ECO-LABOR-ATION Nonprofit Corporation is incorporated in the State of North Carolina, USA and registers in other regions as our projects and volunteer activities require. ECO-LABOR-ATION Nonprofit Corporation was recognized as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and public charity by the United States' Internal Revenue Service effective June 11, 2009.  Donations and grants make our organization's activites possible.

ECO-LABOR-ATION was formed for charitable, education and scientific purposes to promote public awareness of a variety of ecologically-sustainable and ecologically-responsible lifestyle choices. We foster the advancement of education materials & venues, demonstration & exhibition sites, public participation opportunities, and other like-minded organizations.

ECO-LABOR-ATION has a Board of Directors who oversee the regulatory compliance, fiscal soundness and charitable focus of our organization. Our officers and Volunteer Corps take-on the challenge of moderating our forums, developing our online news & learning content, hosting our public events and working on our public exhibitions - from Edible Gardens to interactive Renewable Energy models.  All directors, officers & members of the Volunteer Corps are unpaid part-time volunteers.

ECO-LABOR-ATION is not a membership organization - therefore, you do not have to pay annual dues to access our public forums, online learning content or gallery. When we do organize activites that require an fee, the fee is based on the cost of materials, supplies, location, paid special speakers (if any), and the like. We strive to keep our administrative expenses to the bare minimum by meeting in public libraries, parks, campuses, plazas and the offices/homes/farms of our volunteers and sponsors; we also use the Internet to make public access to our information available around-the-clock at the lowest possible cost.

Does ECO-LABOR-ATION hold regular office hours?

Currently, No. "Why not?" you might ask ...

We'd be honest in telling you that just about all of our directors, officers and volunteers would prefer to be outside gardening, practicing ecological building or picking-up trash rather than hanging-out inside of an office. But actually, the real reason  we don't have regular office hours is:

Given the small size of our All-Volunteer organization & our commitment to operate with the lowest possible administrative expense, we have decided that it would be a poor use of our limited funds to rent office space, purchase office funriture and equipment, and commit to monthly utility services such as electricity, phone and water connections at this time. Even in a tiny, closet-sized location, those expenses can easily add-up to $500 per month or much more ... currently our recurring "office"-type expenses are well under $1000 per year, which means the contributions and grants we receive are able to fund more charitable initiatives and other ECO-LABOR-ATIONs for the public's participation and enjoyment. However, in addition to our events, we are available in a"Virtual Office"  sort-of-way - that is to say, we accept & reply to email messages as frequently as possible and we do our best to return your phone calls. We hope you will choose not to be disappointed with or put-off by our bare-bones approach - once you consider how much leaner our expense sheet looks compared to similarly-sized organizations who allocate more of their operating budget to office space and staff.
